The men and women who go to the temples falling under HR & CE department would have to follow the some dress code now. That dress code includes Dhoti, pajama, or formal pants with shirts and Sari, churidar etc. for women. No Bermudas, jeans or tight leggings will be entertained according to the order from High Court effective from January, 1, 2016.
Tamil Nadu is known for its several big temples and HR&CE (Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments) does the job of maintaining those temples. When I went to the website of HR&CE, I could not find the notice in English. If it was in Tamil, I could not understand; however, they are making sure that the notices be posted in English and Tamil so that the tourists also get aware of this announcement.
As per local newspapers people are welcoming this decision. Mylapore Talk, the local Mylapore (Chennai) newspaper quoted Usha Tholagappian saying, “It is necessary to preserve our culture. The prescribed dresses will not cause any unwanted attention and distraction in the temple premises to the devotees”.
Distraction to the devotees by dress code! Is that seriously a concern? What is wrong with men wearing jeans and going to the temple? How is it different to wearing formal trousers which they have allowed?
Today there was another feature of this news in Business Standard which stated, “The Tamil Nadu government has decided to appeal against the Madras High Court order setting a dress code for devotees visiting temples in the state, which came into force from January 1”.
When I entered to check this news, it was entirely a different story than what I had imagined. It said that the Government is concerned about several temples in the state that have rules to keep the upper body open while the judge S. Vaidyanathan’s statement included ‘should’ for upper cloth.
The question is does dress code make any difference. It is not only the devotees that enter the temple premises. There are some tourists, college groups etc. Those with no devotion also go to the temples. Those with show off mentality also go to the temples. Will such people resist looking at a beautiful lady wearing a Sari or Churidar? Or, will they get the grace of God by wearing Dhoti or pajama.
The local news channels have this on youtube as well. Watch the video.
