![]() Know your religion: Most of the ancient literature is written in Sanskrit and what most of you read is not necessarily the original one but the interpretation or translated versions. Now, these translations might not be accurate and if you do not understand Sanskrit you will certainly not have any chance to validate the translated version. Religious Prayers: By learning Sanskrit you will be able to understand Mantras better and using correct pronunciations for Sanskrit words. The prayers (most of them) are in Sanskrit composed by ancient saints. Many people read them not knowing the meaning and when anyone tells anything you have no option but to believe that okay this was the meaning. This is when anyone becomes your religious guru. Learn Ancient Literature: There are several works India had produced for example, Astrology, Palmistry, Tantra, Ayurveda, Yoga etc. Whichever interests you, but you will get benefitted only when you read the original text. Okay, the translations are available but they have been interpreted differently by different scholars and this will leave you confused. Break Several Myths: The Vedas, Puranas, Upanishadas were all written in Sanskrit. People don’t read any of the original texts and then accuse the Vedic culture. Most of the superstitions have developed because of those who did not read or were not able to read Sanskrit literature or they took just a small portion of something and made it something else. Read an example. Apart from the other benefits of learning Sanskrit, there is one thing I can assure you is if you learn Sanskrit you understand at least some if not most of most Indian languages including the Dravidian languages (Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam). For example Aama, Vichitra, and Bhayam are some Tamil words that appear to be derived from Sanskrit or even if not derived, have the same meaning. I do not want to get into the oldest and youngest language debate but there are lots of words from Sanskrit being used in every part of India so why not get benefited from this. DD News has started a program called “Vartavali” which is mostly in Sanskrit and I appreciate their effort in keeping this language alive. They share news in Sanskrit and you can also follow them on twitter. |
